Relationships
 | There are addictions counselors that have a professional designations,
find out about their certifications. |
 | A counselor is a person who will almost always be chosen at the most
vulnerable time in your life. It is important to know what to ask the person
who will fill this role. |
 | The type of counselor varies, specialized training is available for many
areas of behaviors and relationships, therefore it is important to choose
the properly educated counselor for your needs. |
A Client's Bill of Rights
 | You have the right to know what code of ethics the counselor is following.
 | Have the counselor present you with a written copy of their specific
code of ethics. |
 | Review this Code of Ethics with them on their own time, at their own
costs. |
 | An ICADC counselor usually is required to recertify every two years,
so check the dates on the actual certificates. |

 | You have the right to know the counselor's specific treatment methods.
 | Have the counselor detail his/her treatment methods to you in advance
of hiring the counselor, or at any time during the term of your
treatment or therapy. |
 | Request regular written reports. |

 | Request an estimate of treatment time, in most cases this will be under 6
months with follow up sessions.
 | You have the right to know the counselors qualifications. |
 | Request that the counselor supply a listing of qualifications and
experience. Have the counselor detail this with you at their own cost. |
 | Request documented information about the counselor's accrediting
associations and grievance procedure. |
